SMS could cripple systems

Wow, who would’ve thought that SMS could take down a mobile phone network. Well, according to a report covered below, it could be a problem.

Hackers could clog and cripple mobile phone services by inundating networks with text messages, a US study has found.

Websites and email addresses give mobile phone users different methods to receive short messages, but those mechanisms can increase the threat of a denial-of-service attack, according to study by computer scientists at Pennsylvania State University.

Hackers could flood mobile phone networks if they sent 165 messages a second in an attack.

Text messaging has largely been reliable and an important part of communicating, even when mobile phone services fail, the study says. [Read the rest]
