So, you wake up in the morning, and get ready for work. It’s time to get all of your gadgets ready to go, and you realize that you totally forgot to recharge the batteries in your BlackBerry, iPod, and digital camera. The problem: it’s 6:30 AM and you need to be at the office for 7 AM. Some try to charge their gadgets to the absolute last second they can before they walk out the door. However, the honest truth is that there is really nothing like a fully charged gadget to start off your day. Say you live in a metropolitan area and either walk to work, or take some sort of public transit to get there - you can now charge all of your gadgetry by simply walking around!
A backpack is in the works that will have the ability to actually generate enough electricity to be able to recharge cell phones, GPS devices, protable music players, etc. For those interested, the electricity is generated by the continious up-and-down movement of the backpack’s cargo compartment which contains a pack that turns a gear connected to a generator. The generating method is apparantly very similar to how gadgets such as hand powered radios are powered.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A backpack that converts a plodding gait into electricity could soon be charging up mobile phones, navigation devices and even portable disc players, U.S.-based researchers said on Thursday.
Their backpack design converts mechanical energy from up-and-down movement of the backpack’s cargo to electricity during normal walking.
