Turn That PocketPC into a GSM/GPRS Phone

Last month I wrote about the need for a CompactFlash cellular phone card that could plug into your PocketPC and turn it into a genuine phone and thus forget waiting for the carriers to take cutting edge devices to just cutting off their edge by the time they finally release. Well Lockergnome reader Kristopher Dick e-mailed me to a link to Mobile Planet that made my eyes widen pretty big.

What I found was a few CompactFlash cards that did the very thing I had asked for. At first, I thought “talking on your PocketPC” really meant using VoIP via the GPRS connection, but MobileTechReview.com’s review of the Enfora’s card proved other wise. While you do have to use a wired hands-free ear bud and mic to talk, hey, it’s still a real phone call from your PocketPC! It is basic as it does not tap into your Contacts database like PocketPC Phone Edition does, but I’m sure that’ll come real soon. Plus as a bonus, you can use it on your laptop, too, and thus turn your PC into a phone as well.

Okay, now we’re getting some where, let’s get full integration people and let’s not forget us CDMA customers at Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless! :)
