Wireless VoIP is officially upon us

Really, I think that the overall advancement of VoIP is going to piggyback onto the outcome of WiMax and its timely public acceptance as the ‘new standard’ for wireless communications.
This must be wireless networking and telephony week, because there a ton of stories out there today dealing with either wireless networking or VoIP, or with a combination of the two. First up is a pair of articles from the EET, one of which is about Sprint’s decision to team up with Intel on WiMAX standards and the other of which is about the rapid adoption of VoIP. Completely coincidentally, I said in my Bluetooth + UWB post yesterday that once the ‘Net goes wireless, “you can also say goodbye to wireless providers, because who needs Sprint if you’ve got UWB and VoIP.” Although the original context of that quote was a bit of blue-sky speculation about a possible future UWB mesh Internet, it’s clear that Sprint intends to stay relevant in the medium- to near-term by getting in the ground floor of the imminent wireless Internet telephony revolution.
