A New iPod Accessory: Tax

Since the inception of the World Wide Web and eCommerce, states have tried everything they can imagine to get their fair share. Thankfully, ever attempt has been moved to the /dev/null/ section of the Internet Tax hard drive and us ‘Net loving surfers gleefully continue to purchase our goods.

Well now Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle is trying to get some funding for his state in one very cheesy way: nail the kids downloading that noisy rock ‘n’ roll.

In short, Doyle wants to tax every music and video download that enters his state. “It’s an issue of tax equity,” said Jessica Iverson, a spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. “If you go into a Main Street business and purchase a CD, you are paying tax.” Well just as a wake-up-and-smell-the-coffee bulletin, Jessica, I didn’t walk into anything, I sat down and made a few clicks and my iPod became real happy.

There’s a big difference from brick-and-mortars and virtual stores and that’s what these cheese-head like states keep forgetting. I know every state is hard-up for money and is daily spinning the Lotto wheel for yet another crazy law to increase revenue, but there comes a time where one needs to stop using the word “fair” when trying to link two very different forms of commerce together. Since I am already paying taxes on my phone line, my cable line, and every other stinkin’ line that enters my house, I have already paid taxes to the state and to the Fed’s. I never went into a physical store and thus should not be required to pay for a tax on the purchase of music — or for anything else for that matter — that I purchase off the Internet. I refuse to be double taxed…ATM’s erk me enough, I don’t need a new frustration, Okay? Now if you want to create a “Poor Taste Tax” for those who desire to download N’SYNC, Britney, or any American Idol winner, then that’s cool! ;)
