Less then twenty-four hours after Verizon gave notice that it wanted to buy Sprint, Sprint announced Wednesday that it
would be merging with Nextel. Done deal.
The new company, Sprint Nextel, will spin off Sprint’s local telecommunications and concentrate on ruling the push-to-talk
market.
Sprint will combine its upcoming CDMA EV-DO network with Nextel’s P2T network to make the third largest cellular phone
company in the United States. It will be hovering very close to Verizon’s subscriber base of 42 million. However, with its
combined network coverage, it could reach 262 million people. That would give Sprint Nextel the largest coverage map of any
other carrier in the nation. I guess those three guys in the office have a lot to dance to, today, huh? “Get up on this… Oooooh, baby, baby!”
