Wi-Fi Hotspots: Slow Progress

I have found myself nodding in agreement to the message that Wi-Fi Hotspots are slow going it seems. Aside from coffee shops and bookstores, it is tough to make a real business from Wireless Internet by itself without something else to carry it through those rough months.

Ask the average IT pro to name the six leading cellular carriers operating in the Unites States, and the probability is pretty high you’ll get the right answer. Ask that same person to name the leading providers of nationwide Wi-Fi hotspot service, however, and you may draw a blank stare. Recently, on a drive into the office, I heard a commercial on a local AM radio station touting the fabulous wealth opportunity and unlimited potential of the Wi-Fi hotspot market. “Yes, you, too, can get in on the early action, but act quickly as prime locations are going fast.” Yes, it’s an immature market, filled with sharks, but it’s showing some signs of maturing.

What Do You Think?
