Cell Phones Replace Computers?

Live from Gnomedex!

During the last panel, on security, a remark was made upon the possibility of ditching the computer alltogether and having people using cell phones. This plan is a long, long way off in the future, and I don’t really see myself ever switching over from a computer to a cell phone as my main device for my everyday computer use.

The fact that the idea was brought up during the Future of Security panel brings up the point that cell phones are probably more secure in the long run. While there are a very small amount of viruses floating around there for cell phones, if/when the switch happens, why wouldn’t the virus writers do the same thing?

Another question that I would ask is: do I want to be constantly connected to my work and personal files. The fact that you would always have access to everything you do gives you no freedom to go away and be on vacation.

In the long run, I believe that (at most) cell phones might be able to take away a medium-sized chunk of laptop users and convert the over to cell phones and smart phones.
