Can Wi-Fi MANs Fly?

I was wondering when this was going to come up. Dave Molta of Mobile Pipeline believes that this concept of “city-wide” Wi-Fi is a fool’s dream in many ways. He sees flaws right from the get-go, which include a faulty business model (his opinion) and poor planning in general.

Molta mentions problems ranging from the fact that WiFi was conceived as a Local solution and is thus ill-suited for wide-area use, and also that the protocol overheads reduce throughput, that interference will be immense, that there are business hurdles, and that the Municipal WiFi networks will end up like city streets - poorly maintained and full of holes.
