Chris Pirillo produced a good video called Should Wi-Fi Be Free?
I use wireless often, both in Detroit and Toronto. I’ve never had a problem finding an open Wi-Fi port in either city. Hotels seem to be in clusters with their competition and usually at least one of them has an open port. If not near a hotel, I look for large apartment complexes or buildings and find multiple open ports.
The coffee shops and other retailers that have “pay” ports should consider having advertising pay for it. Having to look at ads for two or three minutes before you can surf the Web isn’t much of an inconvenience to get on the port. Perhaps looking at their menu or daily specials would generate enough business to pay for it.
Yes, Wi-Fi should be free.

I agree, it is very annoying to go into a Starbucks (after working there for a year, I don’t go in there very often) and not being able to get on the internet without paying *more* money. Just another reason why local coffee shops are better. They usually have free wifi for customers.
Another good thing coffee shops could do, is to have a wifi password printed on the receipt, and make it good for a day. Would be a bit of work on their part, but it is doable.
