This entry is not really open source, but since so many people including myself use Firefox, and Thunderbird then you should all know about MozBackup. I once made the mistake of overwriting my boot partition, thinking that all my Thunderbird, and Firefox bookmarks, and e-mails would be safe. Boy was I wrong !!!! In Windows XP(TM) Thunderbird keeps all the e-mails in the user documents folders on the Boot Drive !!! So I thoughtlessly lost all my years of e-mails. I was unable to repair my Windows XP ™ system, and there were several annoying things going after I uninstalled some Windows Blind stuff, so I though since only the XP stuff was on the boot drive erase and start from scratch. With this type of behaviour there is no real reason to partition drives, like I used to do in the days of Windows previous versions. My usual process of putting together a system is to create a boot partition, and then keep a much larger partition where all my applications and data files go, with some editting of the registry I can even redirect Windows XP to put the Documents and Settings folder on my “D” drive. But for some reason this process did not work correctly on this install, so now I don’t bother, software has gotten so complicated in using shared libraries that unless everything is kept on a single drive, you are asking for problems.
I now use this program MozBackup, and export my FireFox bookmarks to HTML and put everything on an external drive, as well as a DVD.
