Today’s entry is a freeform thought mapper for those of us who don’t seem to be able to think in a linear fashion. This tool called FreeMind; allows people of all thought processes to visulaize the connections between concepts, or processes that you are currently working on. This little app is written in Java, so it will run on virtually OS, and environment. What I have used this app for is another replacement for Visio for drawing software processes, software state machines, or dealing with just getting from point A to point B when you have to incorporate the input of several people. To share your thought processes you can output the result as a PDF, or put your MindMap on a web page using the Java applet. There are even instructions on how to perform this action in the Asked Questions section that is maintained by the developers. You can even put the whole thing on a USB stick and take it with you, yes it is portable!. The types of links that you can create are text, graphical and HTML. The last piece of information that the developers provide is how to use FreeMind in combination with PowerPoint(TM),and Microsoft Word(TM). I would prefer that everyone that reads this blog use Open Office of course, but I realize that some companies insist on using antiquated and/or non-standard compliant software like Microsoft Office(TM).
If this type of software is of interest then take a look at the screenshots located here.
