One More Game, Then On To More Serious Stuff

Today’s entry is an update of an old favorite: Hangman! That’s right, along with Monopoly, Battleship, and umpteen other old fashioned games we grew up with, this game has been computerized! The improvements in this case include English and Spanish vocabularies. While this game is not Open Source, it is free for non commercial use. So if you want to use this game at home, or in your school and do not sell it, then go ahead and use this little gem.

From the Web site:

“Speaking Hangman is an educational game to practice and expand your English and Spanish vocabularies. The game is designed for people of any age above 7 years. Three levels. Speaking Hangman features 3 levels of vocabulary in 2 languages, English and Spanish. The levels of vocabulary are based on statistics about the most commonly used words. At level 1 you will practice the 450 most common words in English or Spanish; at level 2 you will practice the 1,000 most common words in English or Spanish.”

Since this game is programmed in Java, the app will work on your Windows, Macintosh, or Linux, but will require some configuration on those other platforms, since the only exes that are provided are for the more complicated OSes like Windows and Solaris.

Now for a fun game with no learning potential at all! Alien Arena is a first person shooter game that requires that you participate in online games, since there does not appear to be any quest mechanism. There does not appear to be any way to play by yourself against the computer. This means that if you do not have a broadband connection the play will suffer. But the screenshots are magnificent!
