NUT is a program that I have been using for a while to find the various nutritional components of what is in my pantry. But be warned there is only a command line version and no GUI. So if you do not wish to type, then forget this program and I will try to find something with a GUI later. Who knows? Someone may even write a GUI in FLTYK to continue the cross platform aspect of this program.
If you are not totally against typing, then here is some further information about this personal nutritional guide. The nutrients database consists of 7293 foods and 140 nutrients - the complete, latest USDA database. The program is configurable for 1-19 meals per day and any dietary plan - including low carb, zone, low fat, and can keep databases for each family member.
This program can be found here.
With this app I have determined that my salt intake is rather large, so I have stopped eating certain prepared food, and started making my own apple pies, my own salsa, and my own waffles (since the frozen waffles often have calcium carbonate (chalk) in them and I refuse to feed my son or myself this stuff. I would rather ingest the calcium from more normal foods like broccoli, milk, yogurt, and cheese.
Have fun analyzing the lunchtime consumption of your colleagues as well. You can annoy them with how much fat, calories, salt, etc. in those fries, burgers, tacos, and even fried chicken. I just take nuts, fruit, and a Tupperware container of soup, and maybe a box of shredded wheat to work. It can get boring so I slip in some of my fruit salsa every once in a while and laugh as my colleagues attempt to eat the stuff. Hey, kiwi and blood orange salsa is really sweet at first - then the serrano and jalapeno peppers start to burn. Me, I am just used to spicy food because of my upbringing.
