How to Root Nook Color 1.2 for a Full Android Tablet Experience

Posted by on Jul 17, 2011 | 48 Comments

My ideal tablet computer has a 7-inch widescreen and fits in my cargo pants pocket. All of the 7-inch tablets on the market today run Android OS (no 7-inch iPad or TouchPad yet). Unfortunately, the cheap 7-inch Android tablets perform badly, while the expensive ones perform well, but cost as much or more than an iPad. A good compromise is the Nook Color from Barnes & Noble. At $249.00, the Nook Color offers a modified Android experience (read: hobbled) out of the box, with the full ebook reader experience. The biggest downside to the Nook Color is Barnes & Noble have limited which apps you can install. By rooting the Nook Color, which basically unlocks the operating system and allows you to install apps and features not supported by Barnes & Noble, you get a full-fledged Android tablet meeting my cargo pants pocket criteria.

Disclaimer
Before I walk you through the process of rooting your Nook, keep in mind rooting may void the warranty. Forcing 8 failed boots by holding down the N and power buttons as you boot up, allows you to reset your Nook to factory settings, so you can revert the rooting process. I’m providing the info here as is. If your Nook is in some way permanently damaged, consider yourself warned.

Getting Ready to Root Your Nook Color
While there are a few careful steps you need to make, rooting the Nook Color and adding the fully-featured Android OS experience, complete with the Android Market and all available Android apps, is reasonably straightforward. For everything to work properly, you need to have previously registered the Nook Color you plan to root with Barnes & Noble, so that their store will still work. It also helps if you have a Google Account setup in advance, but you can create one of those after rooting the device.

Before you begin, you need to make sure you have a MicroSD card you can format. You will also need some addition software for your computer.

Required Software
7-zip or any other zip utility with support for .tar and .gz files.

Image Writer for Windows is free software used to make your MicroSD card a bootable drive.

ClockworkMod is the software that provides a framework to install the rooted Nook Color features. The link includes several different sizes, which are intended to be used depending on the size of your microSD card. The file named 128mb_clockwork-0.7.tar.gz will work just fine.

You will want to download the zip file NOOK-CWM3028-imgfiles.zip from the xda-developers forum, which is where I got pieces of the information used to root a Nook Color.

Manual Nooter is the software update that allows you to maintain the features of Nook Color while also having all the advantages of a full Android OS experience. You will need the version 4.6.16 or newer. The link above also includes downloads for something called touchnooter, which you do not need.

Preparing Your microSD Card
After you acquire all the required software, make sure you have 7-zip or some other zip utility installed. You will want to download and unzip Image Writer for Windows so that you can run it from your computer. Image Writer for Windows doesn’t install, it runs directly from the folder, so you may want to unzip it to a folder on your Desktop or Documents folder to make the software easy to find.

As I mentioned earlier, ClockworkMod comes in sizes for MicroSD cards up to 8GB. You don’t actually need the 8GB version for an 8GB SD card. I recommend downloading one of the smaller sizes to save time and space. You probably will want to reformat the MicroSD to a usable state after performing your root process anyway. Un-gzip and Un-tar the ClockWork you want to use, then you are ready to start building your MicroSD boot drive.

With the MicroSD card connected to a card reader on your computer, launch Image Writer for Windows on your computer. Click the folder icon in Win32 Disk Imager and browse to the location of your ClockworkMod file. Choose the correct drive letter for your MicroSD card from the Device dropdown list. Make sure you have the correct drive letter because otherwise you will be reformatting another drive on your computer. Once you have the path for ClockWork and the correct Device selected, click the Write button to write ClockWork to your microSD card.

Copy manualnooter-4-6-16.zip from your computer to your microSD card. Do not unzip the file.
Extract the uRecImg and uRecRam files from the NOOK-CWM3028.zip file you downloaded in the list of required software. Rename uRecImg to uImage. Rename uRecRam to uRamdisk. Copy these files over the uImage and uRamdisk files currently on your microSD card.

Assuming you followed the steps up to this point, you are ready to root your Nook Color.

Rooting Your Nook Color
Power down your Nook Color, if you haven’t already. Plug your Nook Color into the charger, because you don’t want to have the battery die in the middle of the software update. Remove the microSD card from your computer and insert it in the SD slot on the Nook Color. Power on your Nook Color and wait for it to boot to the ClockworkMod install screen.

Use the volume up and down buttons to browse to the install zip from sdcard option in ClockworkMod. The N button selects the option and takes you to the next screen.
Next you need to choose zip from sdcard and press the N button again. Choose manualnooter-4-6-16.zip by clicking the N button one more time. You will then go to a screen with an option to Yes – Install manualnooter-4-6-16.zip in the middle of a bunch of No options. Once you select Yes rooting your Nook will commence. When the process completes, you need to reboot your Nook Color. Remove the microSD card before you reboot, so that you don’t end up in the ClockworkMod interface. Assuming everything worked properly, when your device boots, you will go through a short series of configuration steps. I highly recommend watching the video below so you can see the process before you go through it yourself.

I am stationed in Germany with the U.S. Military; B&N doesn’t allow me to DL books from them to my nook but the Kindle app does allow me to DL books. Now I can use my nook to DL books directly to my nook, they just come from Amazon. Great DIY article, THANKS!!!

After successfully completing the process above I arrived at the same place. I then
successfully installed a couple of aps. Radar Weather was one of the aps.

However … the first time I ran Radar Weather if performed perfectly. Every
successive time I ran it I got a notice saying that location services needed
to be turned on. I checked and noted that I was indeed connected to my
network, so that should have been enough, but I was never able to get that
or any other ap requiring location services to run.

I searched on the net, and found that this is indeed a problem (the note
listed unable to enable location services as a “signature” problem.

Has anyone else encountered this, and is there a solution for this problem?

NOOK-CWM3028-imgfiles.zip doesn’t look like it’s in the XDA thread anymore, unless it’s named something different and I don’t understand it.

This seems simple, however I can’t get my card to work. I have a mac. Do I put the manualnooter file on the CM7 disk or the boot disk (2 partitions of SD card?) Do I have to rename the image files? If so, you can’t replace them in the zip file without opening (thus unpacking) the zip file). Where do I put the image files? Lastly, do I need the “nightly” that the dev site talks about? Thanks

So do you use Win32 Disk Imager on manualnooter? Or just CWM? It says to copy, I don’t know if that means to make it an image on the MicroSD.

Thank you for sharing the instructions for rooting a Nook Color.

I had my NC (v1.2.0 blue dot) rooted by following your instructions. Some of you might have fared better but yesterday after updating to v1.3.0, I lost connection to two of the five programs/icons on the home screen (if you can call it that). Also, I could not connect to the Android Market. So I had to reset (by doing the 8 Ns) and revert to stock v1.2, updated to v1.3 and rooted (again) using the method above.

    It works fine now.

I have the Amazon app in my NC. I followed this how-to reference. According to the instructions:

      - Uncheck and re-check the “Allow Non-Market Apps” in “Nook Color Tools”.
      - Power off and power back on the Nook Color.
      - …
      - Once the .apk downloads, the download icon in the lower left notification area
will stop moving, tap it, then tap the .apk.
      - It will ask you again to choose how to complete the action. Choose the bottom
one. It is called “Package Installer”. You can set this as default, because the
top one “App Installer” NEVER works.

Note: I prefer not to set any of the action as MY default, left it as-is.

Jake — the reason you use a CWM file designed for the size of your micro-SD card is that when you format/install the file, it resizes your SD card to the size the file was designed for. Why is this potentially important? Because if you have an 8gig card and install the 1gig version of the file, you will be left with less than 1 gig of backup space on your SD card. A lot of people like to have ROM backups on their bootable SD card. A 128mb flash is going to leave you NO space for backups on a particular card. That 8 gigs of space will be totally wasted (unless you reformat the SD card, of course). Now, if you have no desire to save ROM backups on your card, then a 128mb file is fine. Just install, and reformat the SD card afterwards and use it for more space on your NOOK for downloads, etc.

You should update your post for people who have updated their Nooks to the 1.3 stock Barnes and Noble firmware (it’s automatic at some point). These old instructions will be problematic for people with the 1.3 firmware on their Nooks.

    1. If you have the 1.3 firmware on your Nook, get the latest CWM here: http://www.techerrata.com/android/teamwin/1gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1-eyeballer.zip
(Irony: Only a 1gig version currently exists, so on my 4gig SD card, it got partitioned as a 1Gig card for this file, lol) If you want to manually update your PRE-ROOTED STOCK NOOK to firmware 1.3, follow instructions here: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nookcolor-support-software-update/379002520/

    2. Now that you’ve downloaded the “eyeballer.zip” file linked above, follow Jakes instructions on flashing your SD card. Note: I did NOT have to follow this step that Jake mentions: “Rename uRecImg to uImage. Rename uRecRam to uRamdisk. Copy these files over the uImage and uRamdisk files currently on your microSD card.” It wasn’t necessary.

    3. OK, now you have the basics of a bootable SD card, BUT you still have to add two more Manual Nooter files. So, for the rest of the instructions, follow along here. You will start with the section that says “1.3 must do these instructions first…” http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027

As you follow the instructions, first you install the first(older) manual nooter zip in the process. When it’s finished, press the “N” button on your Nook to get back to the previous menu, THEN install the newer version of the manual nooter file. Press “N” again after completion to get to the main recovery menu where you will have the reboot option. Be sure to follow the instructions on how to ‘repair permissions” after everything is up and running.

If you haven’t rebooted/switched off the NC after upgrading, then good! If you did, most likely you’ll go on an endless loop, too late (based on my experience, may be different for others), only solution is to roll back/reset to factory setting (then, root, again).

To roll back to older version of the two Adobe apps:

    1. Go to apps
    2. On lower right hand corner, touch settings
    3. Select “Manage apps”

Note: if it takes a long time to load up your applications, slide your finger, right to left, bottom of your touch screen, then select “All” applications (top of your screen)

    4. Pick “Adobe AIR”
    5. Click “Uninstall” to roll back to v2.6.0.1912 (Make sure to check your current version!)
    6. Do the same with “Adobe Flash Player”
    7. Click “Uninstall” to roll back to v10.3.185.22 (Make sure to check your current version!)

    Android Market
    1. Search for “Adobe AIR” and “Adobe Flash PLayer”
    2. Uncheck “Allow automatic updating”

Upon looking up some info on my nook color I came across some info pertaining to rooting a nook.
I would be considered less than a novice when it comes to anything dealing with a pc, let alone an e-reader.
With that said, is rooting my nook something I sould get someone else to do? Also, i have version 1.3. Will it work for that version?  There are a lot of conflicting videos out there telling me i need this and that. Its giving me a headache. I envy you guys who know all this computer “stuff”. Just trying to get the most out of this thing.

    Software: Version 1.3.0
Problem: After powering off, on start up, hangs at “Nook co”.

Here’s my experience and solution (not sure if it works for you):

After rooting, everything works. I could turn off/power off my Nook Color without any problem. But after a day or so, the NC would auto-update the following programs:

    Superuser (updates to v3.05)
    Adobe Air (updates to v3.0.0.408)
    Gmail (updates to v2.3.5.2)
Adobe Flash Player (updates to 11.0.1.153)
    ROM Manager (updates to v4.7.0.5)

This is where the problem starts. After switching it off (power off) and re-starting, hangs at the words “Nook co” and goes on an endless loop. Grrrrrr.

I re-rooted my NC several times to isolate the app(s) causing the problem “hang” and found out it was the two recently updated Adobe apps causing trouble.

    Solution: Uninstall Adobe updates

Adobe Air from v3.0.0.408 rolled back to v2.6.0.1912
Adobe Flash Player from v11.0.1.153 rolled back to v10.3.185.22

    Works fine now :-)
