Sony’s PlayStation Portable is the hottest gadget on the market right now. I don’t care what Apple does with their next iPod release, they simply can’t touch Sony short of building a gaming platform. The release of Sony’s PSP Media Manager this past week is a solid 1.0 offering with the option to subscribe to feeds and transfer photos, video or audio to a Memory Stick for PSP viewing and playback. Chris took advantage of this new functionality to create photocasts of Flickr RSS feeds. Next on the list is a way to automatically marry recorded television from Windows XP Media Center Edition to your PSP. This one is a little more complicated because PSP Media Manager and competitor PSPWare don’t recognize the DVR-MS file format. DVR-MS files are slightly souped-up MPEG-2 files, which means changing the extension to .mpg tricks PSPWare and PSP Media Manager into seeing the file as a plain-old MPEG-2 file. If you automate the renaming process of changing dvr-ms to mpg and setup PSPWare to watch for recorded TV shows, you get your DVR-MS files converted for PSP playback automatically. It’s easier than it sounds - my free tutorial on batch converting DVR-MS for PSP playback will get you started in a matter of minutes.
