Repair iTunes Smart Playlist Support for Podcasts

The addition of podcasting in iTunes is outstanding for those of us who publish podcasts. It’s also an improved experience for subscribing to podcasts. As a subscriber to several podcasts, I’m finding certain things about the iTunes user interface to be mildly frustrating. For instance, I want more control over downloading shows. I’d love to be able to point individual shows at folders designated by me, instead of choosing one folder that stores all the subfolders for the 10 podcasts I currently subscribe to. I can live with that imperfection. What I can’t live without is Smart Playlisting for my podcasts. iTunes disables Smart Playlists for podcasts by default because they’ve walled podcasts off from the main music library in iTunes. You can still add podcasts to smart playlists by making some minor tweaks to the iTunes settings, but Apple doesn’t make this as obvious as they should have. To re-enable Smart Playlists for your podcasts, read my tutorial on Smart Playlists and Podcasting.
