Media player companies aren’t as sneaky as they used to be about trying to grab every possible file association each time the player was opened out of necessity. These days you might get nagged to be sure you don’t want the player to overthrow your audio and video collection, but subversion is now left for the writers of spyware. One arrogant exception staunchly refuses to play nice with your media - QuickTime. Apple continues to assume that what it wants you to do with your media is what you should want to do with your media, frequently associating files with either QuickTime or iTunes instead of leaving well-enough alone. There are ways to defeat this refusal to play nice; namely uninstalling QuickTime.
