Windows XP Needs A GarageBand

In the world of loop-based music creation, there are many powerful (and pricey) solutions for composing unique works. These tools provide minute manipulation of subtleties meant to make the music creative process as close to perfect as possible. For most of us, all this detail just gets lost because we simply want the thrill of combining different sounds to make something that plays like a song. Apple created the perfect tool for neophyte composers with GarageBand. Since most of the computing universe doesn’t own a Mac, one of the more common questions I respond to is, ‘what is the Windows equivalent of GarageBand?’ The truth remains nothing, at this point, but there are a few apps that get you close. Just recently I explored some of the options that might be acceptable to someone looking for the Windows XP version of GarageBand.

OpenSebJ has many features that are present in commerial audio sample track based editing software, except that it’s Open Source and subsequently available for free to any one who wishes to use it. The underlying technology that OpenSebJ uses is solid and provides for a true real-time audio composition environment as well as pre & post production requirements. Basic features such as assigning samples to PC keys are provided for people who have not yet entered the MIDI market and as such reduces to barrier to entry for budding music producers. It is available for free download from here: http://www.evolvingsoftware.com
