Watch DVDs on your PSP

Sony is known legendary for introducing media formats that are technically superior but locked down to the point where they fall flat on their face. UMD, the format used for commerical game and movie releases for PSP is no exception. Sony’s getting way too much flack for releasing a proprietary format this time around, considering it’s a game console and game consoles are known for their incompatibility. More than one site has posted a woe is us type take on the fact that UMD doesn’t offer a write mode. Instead of whining, using the available tools to their fullest is a better strategy. PSP supports Memory Stick DUO Pro, which, while being another stupid Memory Stick variant is also an easy way to play the music and movies you want on your PSP. Instead of piling up a library of movies on individual UMDs, why not convert movies to a PSP compatible format and watch them on your PSP via Memory Stick. All you need to do is take those DVDs in your collection and convert them to the PSP-supported MP4 format. Read this tutorial on converting DVDs for PSP to see how easy it is, then go get yourself a Memory Stick DUO Pro for that PSP.
