When Standard Definition Broadcast Meets Your HDTV Screen

While we all buy our HDTV screens for the amazing picture quality of High Definition broadcasts, the majority of available programming through satellite and cable providers is still in plain old standard definition. Most of the HDTV vendors don’t show you what standard definition programming looks like on your screen before you buy it, so unless you seek out a store willing to show you how well a specific model scales the 480i content broadcast by standard definition stations, you won’t know how good or bad the entire scope of your television viewing will look until you get home. Depending on your home theater configuration, how you make various connections to your television and what your personal viewing habits are, you may or may not end up with a case of buyer’s remorse due to really ugly image quality of your favorite show. In order to avoid problems associated with the differences between HD resolution, DVD resolution and standard definition resolution image quality, read my guide on viewing standard definition television on an HDTV screen.
