“On Tuesday, August 24, AOL Music will feature the exclusive world premieres of two new singles from Queen Latifah - a cover of The Mamas & The Papas classic ‘California Dreamin” and a version of the Dinah Washington hit, ‘Baby Get Lost.’ The songs are highlights from the artist’s first full-length album as a vocalist, The Dana Owens Album, due in stores September 28. Entitled The Dana Owens Album, after the artist’s given name, the recording consists of twelve tracks - half of which are produced by Arif Mardin, the other half by Ron Fair–that span a wide stylistic range including soul, blues and pop songs from every decade between the 1920s and 1970s. Her interpretation of ‘California Dreamin” was inspired by Jose Feliciano’s soulful 1969 cover of the song. The recording opens with ‘Baby Get Lost,’ a 1949 hit for one of Latifah’s musical heroines, Dinah Washington. Replete with a big band arrangement, the track reveals the extent to which the late jazz singer has influenced Latifah’s own singing. In addition to these highlights, The Dana Owens Album includes songs from the repertoires of Bill Withers, Peggy Lee, Al Green, Nina Simone, Cannonball Adderly, Dr. Buzzards Original Savannah Band and Barbara Lewis.”
