From Russia, With Love (And Unparalleled Value)

Gnomie Joseph writes:

There’s a new online music store on the block, of which you may or may
not have heard. They’re based in Russia, and they sell music in various
formats and bit rates for $0.01 per megabyte. Yes, you read that right.
A high quality song can cost about five cents. An album can cost less
than a dollar. It’s obviously a site with great potential for abuse by
those who live in places where their methods of providing music may be
less than legal. What I’d like to share at the moment is how it is
slowly enabling me to rebuild my decimated music collection.

In October of 2000, my apartment was burglarized and hundreds of CDs
stolen. I still have the liner notes, which were stored in separate
albums. I’d rebuilt most of the collection, and was in the middle of a
backup when they were wiped out by a drive failure. But now I’ve got
the wonderful All of MP3. With
their prices about what I feel is fair for the simple service of
restoring to me the music to which I have already purchased the rights
they’ve already allowed me to restore my Metallica and R.E.M. albums,
and I’ll be finishing the job as I find the time.

Of course the service will be used in less virtuous ways, and for the
most part, I don’t have a problem with that. I’m of the opinion that
the music industry is about to withdraw into a cocoon. In a couple of
years, it will emerge more consumer friendly, and more capable of
serving the vast array of musical interests that exist in our connected
world. I don’t imagine All of MP3 will last, but while it does, I hope
it will help others like me, who have had their musical lives damaged.

However, Ken Colburn had something to say about these types of services in a Windows Fanatics Gnewbie Gnook article a few days back, and it might be worth your while to read. In any case, it’s always best to make an informed decision. Just be prepared to take responsibility for whatever your choice may be!
