64 Bit Operating Systems: Is YOUR Software Ready?

I’ve been using Windows XP x64 on and off for about a while now, and have found that it is MUCH more stable and reliable than a standard 32 bit Windows build. Obviously, with most of today’s processors being 64 bit enabled, it will only be a matter of time before x64 OSes become ubiquitous. The question - how long?

Right now, most drivers and software are designed for x86 architectures. And yes, in many cases, a separate x64 version can be downloaded. But a lot of developers are still not doing what they should be to prepare for the transition to x64.

As a 32 bit OS cannot handle anything above 4GB of RAM, the point where 4GB (and up) becomes the norm for a standard PC will be the definitive end of 32 bit computing. But in reality, that point is not far away at all. I remember when 512MB was considered plenty of memory. Now I have 3GB and wish I had more. Think about where standards will be in a couple of years. 16GB? 32GB? The possibilities are endless.
