For my money and my own freedom, there was never any question in my mind that I had zero interest in maintaining a computer repair office. They are expensive, an extra commute and frankly with few exceptions, unneeded. In my years as a computer consultant (computer repair tech), I never found any value in taking this kind of plunge. Here are the biggest reasons against it.
- It’s expensive.
- You lose some freedom as you are always dealing with walk-in traffic.
- You will lose any given time efficiency unless you have some one to greet in coming customers for you.
- You schedule is all over the map as you know must maintain a computer repair office, which puts real limitations on how often house calls can be made.
Now for some reasons why it may indeed, make sense to maintain a computer repair office.
- Zoning and licensing laws force you to not run any sort of computer repair business from your home, even if there is no foot traffic into your home based on your business.
- You need more space than your current home provides for.
- A place outside of the home means getting more done. It does not need to be a retail space, but a place with broadband, heat and electricity for running your computers.
Which is the best move for you? Simple, run your business from home if you have the space and can keep family/business separate from one another. If it looks like you will need to lease some extra room, consider doing so without a office space mindset, the office leasing should be nothing more than a work space. Remember, this is not a help site for getting into the computer sales, just computer consulting and repair.
