Change! That is the name of the game. Picked up a “new” computer cheap the other day. It’s a P4 1.4 Ghz with 1 Gb of RAM. It had a pirated copy of XP Professional on it so I formatted the drive. Then I thought I’d give Ubuntu another try. Well I loaded it up and quite honestly I still don’t see what all the fuss is about it. So I installed PCLinuxOS which runs quite well. But I was poking around a few sites and downloaded SUSE 10.2 and installed that instead. Wow! What a difference and I have to say so far this is the best version of Linux that I’ve used yet though PCLinuxOS is close behind. So far SUSE 10.2 is running well though the networking issues with SAMBA and my home Windows XP network don’t like each other but those are issues I’ll have to work out. I know it’s possible but for now I’m happy to have the machine up and running. Still though I don’t think it’s quite as easy as XP but so far SUSE is worlds better than Ubuntu.

mmm, i too started with SuSE (8.1) After dealing with RPMs (the software installation type) for a year or so, I tried Debian (and now Kubuntu), which uses DEB files for installation. At first I felt like Debian was a childrens version of the Mighty SuSE, but if a childrens version is what it takes to get away from the RPM format and into easy maintenance and installation of anything, so be it. Now, I would never consider going back to SuSE, which feels like a Microsoft in the way it broke so often. All about personal preference though. Good luck and enjoy!

I tried SUSE and Kubuntu to get a change from Windows and its associated problems, but they were not a sell for me. I am not a techie, but consider myself an intermediate windows user able to move around in the system and get things done.
The free linux distros all appear much too geeky for my taste and certainly the taste of the average computer user. I finally took the dive and paid for the Xandros 4.1 distro and WOW! It works out of the box and adding programs isn’t a disaster. Its fast and light weight. I will be glad to pay for the work the Xandros folks have done to make linux workable for the rest of us.
