The saga continues with Linux…
I decided to give up on Ubuntu. Too many crashes and my system kept bogging down. A guy I know at work (who I discovered is a Linux geek) suggested PCLinuxOS. I downloaded the live CD and installed the OS on my computer. Here are my first impressions:
- Installation was quick and painless
- The graphics and overall look is much nicer in PCLinuxOS than it was in Ubuntu
- The load on my computer is a lot less and it runs a lot snappier than Ubuntu
What can I say other than what a difference a change in distro makes. I’m still trying to get it to talk to the XP boxes on my network and so far that is going as well as it did under Ubuntu i.e it isn’t working yet. Samba is not very user friendly and it really shouldn’t be this hard to make the computers talk to each other. Even my friend, who runs Linux exclusively in his house agrees. But I will say that my impression of Linux has improved with PCLinuxOS.
Stay tuned!

I’ve got a 450mhz computer. I tried Ubuntu, then Xubuntu, all of which were too slow, which was no surprise since the Ubuntu site says they need more resources than I’ve got. I never had any crashes though.
Puppy Linux is what I have now and it seems to be just the right combination of features and speed for my system. Very easy install, and only about 120Mb. Samba worked out fine for me and I was able to access the shared folders on my Xp machine. Puppy isn’t too glamorous though, unless you use Fluxbox.
I took a look at PCLinuxOS, but since you’ve said it’s faster than Ubuntu, I might try it out too. That’s the cool thing about Linux; if you’ve got highspeed internet and a CD burner, you can get a whole new operating system in half an hour, for free. “Free” as in, “If I give them a donation it won’t be free anymore”.

I’m glad you’ve found a distro more to your liking. That’s one big advantage of Linux - you can keep on trying different distros until you find the one best suited to your needs.
I’ve considered changing from Mandriva 2007 to PCLinuxOS as it’s considered to be an “improved” version of Mandriva (no great rush though). I guess I’ll have to wait until I get broadband or a DVD appears in one of the magazines :(
Ubuntu is popular because it is “free” - not just in cost, but also free of proprietary or non-GPL software. Although noble, that can be a bit of a negative as many major distros do have some non-free applications to make operation and administration easier.
It would be great if you could post a progress report after a week or two.
Cheers :)

I have tried PClinuxOS, the 93c big daddy, and it loads nice on my 450 AMD machine. :)
Then I tried the latest version, and the kernel won’t even boot. :(

BTW, I too am no good on networking.
I have not tried Samba, but I do use ip networking using ip addresses assigned from my dlink Di-604 router.
redhat 9 on a 300Mhz inteled Compaq, using cups to
an HP-CLJ2550. There are two profiles in cups for
printing, one which limits to B&W and one for
colour.
PCLinuxOS on a 450Mhz K6-2 Amd
Vista on a new Centrino chipped Toshiba laptop.
So far, all the laptop is used for (it’s my wife’s computer) is to go online
I have a ftp server setup on the 450 K6-2 machine
I have transferred files from the 300Mhz via ftp
What I have tried and failed at is printing over the
network. I would have thought having cups on both computers, I could send to the cups server on Red Hat from the cups server on PCLinuxOS.
I have not even tried printing from Vista.
