Linux! I have an older PC that I picked up recently real cheap. It’s an older Compaq 700 series with an 800Mhz AMD processor and 128 Mb of ram. I decided to give Ubuntu a try since I didn’t want to run Windows 98. It’s been about 2 weeks now and though I’m definitely not going to give up my other PC with XP so far so good with this PC.

Runs well on the older processor and 128 Mb of ram

It’s free!

Dislikes:

Pain in the @ss to install anything. Feel like a complete newbie but things are getting better now that I’ve gotten a better handle on the terminal window.

The interface and graphics don’t look as polished as XP.

But I know I’m just starting out so I know I have a lot to learn. So far I can browse the web, play my MP3s and most basic things I can do on my XP box. Stay tuned for more adventures!

800 MHz is the minimum recommended system for PCLinuxOS and I think it’ll run well enough on 128 MB of RAM so you might give it a try. Lisa and I like it very well. If you want a faster computing experience on the same machine you could try Xubuntu.

My own 800 MHz system has 256 MB of RAM and is running Debian Sarge. It’s a great deal more “geeky” than *buntu but nevertheless pretty awesome once you get it tweaked.

What I really want is a 1 GHz or faster machine that I can use to try Freespire, Mandriva and OpenSUSE.

If you haven’t joined a LUG, track one down and get on their mailing list. It can be a wonderful resource for you. I joined LUG mailing lists in San Antonio and Austin because there were no nearer lists that had any appreciable traffic on them and I’ve learned an enormous lot by simply reading my email. I’ve also gotten detailed answers to a few questions but I use the LUGs as “last resort” resources because I don’t want to wear out my welcome. :)

If you had slightly better components in your PC you could install Beryl. That would give you eye candy to the equivalent of Vista.

I recently installed Ubuntu 6.10 on my laptop and did a Beryl install. It took me a few tries but if you check out my post there is a link to a good HOWTO as well as a link to a video of Beryl in use.

(the HOWTO is in regards to an AMD64 install btw)
