Windows Virtual Server 2007 Released

Unlike the earlier Virtual Server, Windows Virtual PC 2007 will not run on Windows 2000. (Sniff - an OS with almost all of the advantages of XP, none of the drawbacks, and ran well on boxes half as fast and with half as much RAM - I’ll miss you Windows 2000…)
As with the previous version of Virtual Server, Virtual PC 2007 is a free download here. If you need to run an application that runs on Windows 98 (e.g.), this is what you should use.
This is how you should use it: install Virtual PC 2007 on your XP box, then install Windows 98 on Virtual PC 2007. This will protect you from security flaws in the OS that your important application runs on (Windows 98) - so long as you keep the base OS (e.g. XP) and Virtual PC updated with the security patches that Microsoft issues for them.

VPC 2007 appears to not yet be ready for prime time. What do I base this upon? Well, Last week I attended a MS Launch event where they were nice enough to give me a copy of Office 2007 for allowing them to show me the benefits of Vista, Office 2007, and VPC 2007.
The gentleman who did the presentation was very kind, very well spoken and generally up on all the concepts that MS is espousing. The trouble was less than 40% of the benefits demonstrations actually worked using Vista and VPC 2007. This was not a hardware problem as the PCs used were not run of the mill, both having 4GB of memory, and Core 2 Duo procs. When the demonstration was only done with Vista it seemed to work okay, but any time the VPC 2007 screen would come up first there was real trouble. Nothing seemed to behave the same way twice. The only absolutely positive thing I can say is that we saw no BSODs [virtual or otherwise].

Virtual Server 2007 has not been released. Virtual PC 2007 has. These are two very different products but you seem to have mixed them up.

Mobster points out that I’ve confused Virtual Server and Virtual PC. Also, the latest version of Virtual Server (Virtual Server 2005 R2) also will not run on Windows 2000 (sniff - I’ll miss you Windows 2000 - wahhhh!) - excuse me here while I get a hankie…
