Every now and again something cool happens in Oregon besides the good beer, wine, and food. That something was yesterday’s 10th Annual UFO Festival in McMinnville.

Yes, McMinnville happens to be the sight of the famous (infamous) Trent farm UFO photographs. Crazy.

Anyway, what was once something to be studied and/or debunked is now something to be enjoyed. The highlight of the day’s festivities was the alien parade down 3rd street (and the good beer!).

We figured it was a good way to spend an afternoon while at the same time doing some real-world research into exactly what a stormtrooper looks like before you use Force Push to toss him off a cliff.

I suggest you do some gaming. What’s that, you say? You don’t have $50 to spend on Shrek the Third. Huh? Come again? You think that paying $60 for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End is just silly?

We here at Lunabean HQ agree. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the Top Ten Affordable Video Games. All of the games recommended are under $30, are fairly recent, are backwards compatible with the next-gens, and are a ton of fun.

TEN: Kameo: Elements of Power (Xbox 360)

• Kameo Walkthrough
• This Xbox 360 launch game, created by the revered developer, Rare, is fun and challenging. The hook in this game is the ability to change forms to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. It offers a good deal of gameplay and good replay value.

NINE: Tecmo Super Bowl (Wii)

• $5 download via Wii Virtual Console
• Okay, I’ll admit it. This is a selfish choice. I just love this game and could play it for hours days on end. The simplicity of choosing from 8 plays, the inanity of launching 70+ yard passes, and the ridiculous stats of certain players (Barry Sanders and Jerry Rice…I’m looking in your direction) makes this game, well, magical. If you played this game as a kid, in college, or are simply interested in what football games were like pre-Madden, then this is $5 well spent.

EIGHT: Hitman Trilogy (Blood Money, Contracts, Silent Assassin) (PS2, PC)

• $29.99 at Amazon
• Hitman Contracts Walkthrough, Hitman Blood Money Walkthrough
• Do you like taking out your target and not leaving a trace of your presence? Do you have what it takes to be a Silent Assassin three times over? Well, if you’re a fan of 3rd Person action/stealth games and missed out on any of the Hitman games, then this is the perfect game pack for you. Released just this past week, Hitman Trilogy gives you three great games for only $29.99. This is a true bargain and provides hours upon hours of great gameplay.

SEVEN: Indigo Prophecy (PS2, Xbox)

• $12.99 - $17.99 used at various stores
• Indigo Prophecy Walkthrough
• One of the most under-appreciated games of the past few years, Indigo Prophecy tasks you with solving a murder from the perspective of two different cops; one male, one female. The game is intensely immersive and truly feels like you’re playing a crime novel. If you’re looking for something completely different than the normal gaming fare offered to you, then you should check out this game.

SIX: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Wii Virtual Console)

• $10 download via Wii Virtual Console
• To get one of the greatest games of all time for only $10 without having to leave your house. Could it get any better? If you skipped by this classic Zelda game then now is the time to play it. If you never played a Zelda game, this is the one to try, as all others since work in the same way. It’s like a gateway drug. All your friends are doing it!

FIVE: Bully (PS2)

• $29.99 at Amazon
• Bully Walkthrough
• Another under-appreciated game in my opinion. In fact, this is one of my favorite games of the past few years. You play as Jimmy, the new kid at storied prep school, Bullworth Academy. This game has it all: classic cliques (jocks, geeks, greasers), the change in seasons (Halloween was awesome), and varied gameplay. You can think of it as Grand Theft Auto in prep school. The violent crimes and dirty language, however, are replaced by dirty pranks and minor swearing. I highly recommend this game.

FOUR: God of War (PS2)

• $18.99 at Amazon
• God of War Walkthrough
• The game that started it all, God of War is a violent, bloody, over-the-top romp through ancient mythology. Playing as Kratos, a mortal on a quest for revenge, you must battle your way through legions of classic mythological characters and solve a few puzzles along the way, too. This game raised the bar for 3rd person action/adventure games, and for under $20, it’s well worth owning.

THREE: LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (Xbox 360, PS2, PC)

• $17.99 - $19.99 at Amazon
• LEGO Star Wars II Walkthrough
• Coming off the success of LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Star Wars II continues the light, fun, and comical approach to the Star Wars series, allowing you to play through classic Star Wars moments as, well, LEGOs. The unique gameplay allows you to switch between two characters at any time, or have a friend/parent drop in/drop out as the second character at a moment’s notice. Although this is one of the best kids games out there, it’s also simply one of the best games. It will leave you with a smile on your face, and isn’t that what games are supposed to do?

TWO: Tomb Raider Anniversary (PS2, PC, PSP)

• Tomb Raider Anniversary Walkthrough
• Do you remember when video games were challenging? When you’d spend an hour-and-a-half on one jump, falling to your death over and over, and then finally making it. That feeling of frustration mixed with accomplishment is rare in today’s rote and unoriginal games. Even if you played the original Tomb Raider you should play Tomb Raider Anniversary as the graphics and gameplay have been updated and there are a few surprises to be had. This game will remind you why you started playing games in the first place.

ONE: Resident Evil 4 (Wii, PS2, PC)

• $17.99 - $29.99 at Amazon
• Resident Evil 4 Walkthrough
• It simply doesn’t get any better than this. Having played it now three times it’s one of those games that gets better each time as you learn to appreciate the elements that make it so special. What this game has going for it is a perfect mix of tension, action, puzzle solving, pacing, music, inventory management, weapons/items upgrades, and a compelling story. Even if you’ve played it before, it’s worth playing on the Wii due to the seemless inegration of the Wii Remote.

Today, however, I figured I’d come up with a nice, easy-to-read top 10 list of the missteps Sony has made. So, without further adieu, here we go…

10 - The “Spiderman” font. Why choose a font that already stands for something? It only serves to distract the gamer and make him/her think about Spiderman when they should be thinking about the PS3. On another note, I’m very excited about this week’s debut of Spider-Man 3. See, I’m already thinking of something that’s not the PS3 by just mentioning the font. My spidey senses are tingling…in a bad way.

9 - Lack of force feedback (vibration) in the controller. Much was made about Sony’s decision to emulate the Wii’s tilt motion controls. Whether or not you think Sony ripped it off is beside the point. The fact that they couldn’t figure out how to get vibration and motion control into the controller, and then, as cover, came out and said vibration is overrated and not necessary, really rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

8 - Lack of HD cables. Yet another poor decision by Sony who ostensibly claimed that the true HD buff would want to purchase their own cables when it seems Sony was just too cheap to throw in the very cables that would make the PS3’s highly touted HD visuals come to life. This is an example of how being cheap actually ended up costing Sony money.

7 - Underestimating the Wii. Sony should have been more prepared for a battle for the hearts and minds of gamers, which Nintendo has definitely won. The $250 Wii should have been on Sony’s radar as a potential threat, but their hubris allowed them to ignore it and put it down. Sony, therefore, effectively put down the gamers who would buy a Wii, thus making many of us not want to buy a PS3, just out of principle.

6 - The constant putting down of the customer. Number 7 leads into this one. Sony, throughout much of last year, continually put down their customers, saying, and I’m paraphrasing here, that they should shut up about the price and stop complaining. The PS3 is a good value, they constantly reiterated. Then, there are a variety of classic quotes including one referring to US gamers as “cheap”.

5 - Coming out with two versions. A good deal of talk prior to the launch dealt with what console had what. Card reader? 20GB or 60GB HDD? Why confuse the buyer? Why distract the buyer? And, to the average person, $500 and $600 are the same thing: both prices are prohibitively expensive. There’s a reason why the 20GB version was discontinued.

4 - No plan for online play at launch. Playstation “Home” was announced last month, three months after launch. You know, you can tout your online gaming capabilities all you want, but if you don’t have a plan at launch, then one of your key features is really just a lie, isn’t it?

3 - No “must have” games at launch. Console launch lineups are notoriously sparse and many bad games can be forgiven, but the Playstation 3’s launch lineup was one of the worst to date. “Resistance Fall of Man” was the only semi-hit and most of the remainder of the games were ports of older games. Compare that to the 360’s Perfect Dark Zero, Call of Duty 2, Kameo: Elements of Power, and Project Gotham Racing 3 and the Wii’s Zelda: Twilight Princess and Wii Sports.

2 - Blu-Ray. Who cares about Blu-Ray? My guess is about 73 people. Okay, okay, I know it’s slightly more than that…like 82. My point is that videophiles care about Blu-Ray. That was who bought the launch PS3s, not gamers. This fact escaped Sony and was a fundamental error. Gamers needed to have been the focus, not the living room entertainment crowd. To tell you the truth, I don’t care if my game comes on Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, DVD, CD, or cardboard. A good game is a good game and to tie Sony’s hopes for the adoption of Blu-Ray to the PS3 was, and is, a disservice to gamers.

1 - Price. $600 for a console? Even if it was gold-plated, dusted with saffron, and served caviar out of its disc tray the average gamer wouldn’t pay $600 for a console. Again, gamers are a lot smarter than Sony gives them credit for. We all know that the price will drop between year one and year two, which is about the same time that some decent games will be out for it. In the meantime, gamers will continue to play their PS2s, Wiis, and 360s until there is a compelling game and a price break.

Sony cites lack of demand for the lesser PS3 for this decision. The real question is, why did they make it in the first place?

Sony’s decision to offer two versions of the PS3 is like Porsche making two very expensive cars, identical, except one has a 1990 Geo Metro engine. Sure, both are shiny, but the person in the market for such a product would never choose a 1 liter, 3 cylinder, 49 hp engine.

So it goes with Sony. If you’re asking (or demanding) that your customer drops a minimum of $500 (the lesser PS3) you’ve already excluded the vast majority of gamers. If a person is willing to pay $500, they’re willing to pay $600, and therefore you have the lack of demand for the lesser PS3.

Why Sony couldn’t figure this out is beyond me. Did they actually think that gamers would save up $500, but not $600? That they’ve been saving and saving only to buy the lesser of two very expensive PS3s.

This is another black eye for Sony. Sure, it doesn’t sound like a big deal, “we just stopped making them because nobody wanted them…the consumer demands the 60GB version,” but it demonstrates again how Sony has lost touch with their base.
