No PS3 price cut until summer ‘08

In another terrible decision, showing how out-of-touch Sony is these days, SCEA President, Jack Tretton said in a Game Informer interview that there will be no price cut for the PS3 until at least the summer of 2008.  Apparently, Mr. Tretton and his cohorts, who must reside in a bubble, did not read my How to Save the PS3 article.  I’ll have to work on that.

Sony could not have made a more stupid announcement.  The PS3 is simply not selling well.  Announcing that no price cut will occur for another year and a half will only raise the ire of the gaming public, making them all the more likely to go ahead and buy a Xbox 360 or a Wii, since, lord knows, the price of the PS3 won’t drop any time soon.

Sony’s reasoning, you may ask?  Well, apparently, it cost them so darn much to research, develop, and manufacture the console that they need to eek out every little penny they can.  Of course, they can’t figure out that consoles sitting on shelves aren’t really earning them money.

And then there’s this amazingly out-of-touch quote from Tretton:

“I think the consumers that get their hands on a PlayStation 3 clearly see the value and not only want to buy one for $599, in some instances they’re willing to pay ridiculous prices to buy one on eBay.”

How out-of-touch can one company be?

It is true, that in some instances, like the first 48 hours after the PS3 launched, they were selling for about $2,000.  About a week later, they had settled down to about $1,000.  Now, go to eBay, and type in “PS3″, and you’ll find that people are barely getting retail price for them.

The only people who were willing to pay ridiculous prices for the PS3 on eBay were people who are now bitter and angry that they paid so much for something that they can now walk into any major electronics store and buy for retail.

Seriously, how many bad decisions can Sony make?
