Google OS? Are They Serious?

  • No Related Post

A good while back, I put up a post at my personal blog about rumors of a Google Browser. About the same time, there were many rumors circulating about a Google OS. Recently, some of us here put up post about where we thought web apps were going. Now it seems like the debate over Google releasing an OS is heating up again. The post has over 80 comments. It might be a bit long but is a googley good read on the speculation.

Personally, I love the speculation. It ties right in to the debate over web apps. I agree that web based OSes have not really caught on but I think that is just the user learning curve waiting to catch on. How long did it take for Feed Readers to catch on? With that in mind, how many people are, at present, fully aware of what RSS is? I am of the opinion that as the apps become more user friendly, they will begin to catch on. I feel the same way about a Google OS. I think it is going to happen. The real question is when…

Now there is even a poll on the debate. I caste my vote and I am in the majority (32% with 199 votes at present).

A Google web based OS simply seems like a natural extension for the web giant. It just makes sense. I think it is in the works and likely to show up sooner than any of us image. Google has a knack for stirring up speculation. Remember the April 1 announcement of Gmail? Although I doubt they are really hiring for lunar positions and I question the pigeon ranking methodology, I would venture and OS utilizing their mammoth network is likely. Or maybe it is just another Google Gag… Swig down a glass of Google Gulp, tie into the mentalplex, and give it some thought. Heck, maybe they will announce it on April first… What do you think?

I wouldn’t be too shocked. I’m waiting for the day when desktop computers are just dummy terminals, and the real processing, and software is sitting on a networked super computer somewhere.
When that day comes it would make even more sense to have a Google OS that your dummy terminal desktop logs into.

What Do You Think?
