Why I am Here

For my first post, I thought I might venture take a chance against TL;DR (too long; didn’t read) and tell you how I ended up writing here. At first, this might seem like a boring, stupid idea (and, in the end, it may well be proven true).

My objective is to make clear the reasons I am here, how I feel about being here and share a bit about my personality. By now, you should have noticed 2 things about me and my writing; 1.) I tend, especially in conversation; say more than needed and 2.) For some reason, inexplicable to me, I like to hang prepositional phrases at the beginning at sentence. (Anything Yoda says makes perfect sense to me.) In the light of that, are you willing to read more?

It began, as most journeys worth being told, with the teller being unaware. I was tooling along in CyberSpace on a 486DX4 with the math co-processor. At the time, it was the fastest 486 ever made. That was when it started. A friend of mine recommended the very popular HTML e-zine, Lockergnome. I was hooked and shortly after that I was regular in the lockergnome chat room.

Things only grew from there. I ended up getting a web site on geocities (like who didn’t?), started a little HTML e-zine, built PCs to record audio on, dabbled with a podcast and rented server space for my own site.

It was when I got into the HTML publishing that I encountered a certain gnomie named Chris. He not only answered all my dumb n00b questions but he suggested his book. Both were and immense help. It turned out the CP was in the same Fraternity as I. This Fraternity was the reason for the HTML e-zine and an “e-interview” with the head gnomie even followed. In other words, a big part of the reason I am here is because I most certainly am a fan of Chris Pirillo and his endeavors.

As the many years passed, I have drifted in and out of the CyberWorld. I have, however, always known I could not leave it forever. In general my interest in the internet only grew. I also got a bit more involved in building PCs. I discovered RSS feeds and am a bloglines junkie. I read and write much like piranhas in a feeding frenzy.

Although 2006 has been a year of scarce web presence for Lumpy, I am in the process of changing that for good. I am currently renovating a new place to reside. Connectivity is in the design. There will be DSL and a workstation in every room with the exception of the bathroom. (I even debated that.) The timing of Lockergnome launching this venture is uncanny. Lumpy’s CyberDwelling should be inhabited no later than the end of December.

I am not here because I am an expert. I do know more than most and am definitely a power user. It is likely best said that I am here because I am a passionate addict who loves to write. I love the Internet, computers and technology. (Some have even suggested that I need a 12 step program.) I also like being read… What writer doesn’t? It is more than just satisfying my ego. Being read, receiving feedback and having regular readers makes one a better writer.

Lumpy is certainly a unique nickname and typing it into a search engine will likely find my web sites but it lacks any “brand” value. When I started using it in IRC, I never thought it would become my web identity but it has. The nickname has served me well but getting involved with a site that has a much, much higher recognition factor and reader base is only going to help me write better, motivate me to write more and, hopefully, increase the number of people who read my material.

My interests are rather varied and eclectic. I tend to not be an expert on anything but, given a need, I track down the information and apply it. In general you will likely find eclectic postings on a number of topics. I tend to follow science, space, Knowledge Management and many, many blogs.

One thing that is for sure… I have decided that I must write. In the past six months, I have changed jobs, moved and modified my life. I have made decisions and plans so that by the end of the year I will have time to seriously pursue this and other web ventures. I am looking forward to this endeavor with excitement. Enough for now, I am off to read feeds and find something more substantial to write about.

Thanks for reading,
Lumpy
