Last night on Chris Pirillo Live we hit the Digg front page.

Yes, that’s right: an interactive streaming medium hit the Digg front page. And we survived.

Before we go into any detail I want to give a big congratulations to Subwolf and Usrbingeek. They are two of the greatest folks on the planet. Subwolf and his crew really know what they’re doing when it comes to servers and Usrbingeek put together a great IRC network that managed to handle the flood. Bear, one of our ops, put together a great IRC bot.

The guys at UStream.tv did an AMAZING job. They upgraded their servers just in time for the flood to hit. A round of applause for these guys!

Wow, what a night. I didn’t manage to grab a screenshot of the final Digg number, but we got pretty high.

IRC was nuts. At first I thought we were going to crest at 200, then against at 300, then 350. Finally, we peaked at 405 users in the chat room. 405 in a channel that used to average 40!

Do you understand what it’s like to have 405 Digg users in the chatroom at the same time? I’ll bet you don’t! Check this out:

Usrbingeek’s website served up well over 11 Gigabytes of data: that’s the Java IRC client and nothing else.

All in all it was a hell of a night. I’m glad I managed to get the new AJAX code up and some PHP fixes so the read/writes wouldn’t make the Lockergnome crew entirely angry at me.
