Fertilizer spreaders help you distribute grass seed, fertilizer, and feed onto your lawn. It’s recommended you buy a fertilizer spreader because it is neither efficient nor safe to spread fertilizer by hand. Simply put: you need a spreader. There are several types to choose from, and this article will help you decide which is best for you.
Broadcast spreaders
AKA Rotary spreaders cover a lot of acreage quickly. Fertilizer drops from the hopper to the spinner disc which disperses it over the lawn. You’ll need to overlap the coverage in order to avoid missing spots, and the further away from the machine the fertilizer is tosses, the lighter the coverage you’ll have. You lack control with this method, though, as the fertilizer can easily be spread onto a neighbors lawn or the street.
Drop spreaders
These can easily cover straight lines with almost no waste, but they must be used carefully. The fertilizer drops straight down, so a striping pattern can occur if the entire area is not covered equally.
Hand held
Crank operated spreaders are great for small areas, especially small patches of lawn or gardens. They are hand-cranked and operate similar to a broadcast spreader, but you have much more control over the area that the fertilizer is spread over.
