Credit History, Bank Loans, and World of Warcraft

  • No Related Post

I’ve got a problem: after requesting a credit report from the big three credit history agencies I noticed something that just wasn’t right: someone has applied for several loans in my name. Now, I know this wasn’t me because a) I don’t need a loan for such an absurd amount of money and b) I don’t live in the states those banks are located in.

With that being said, I needed to start an investigation into what the heck was going on. I’m not going to bore you with the legal details (lawyers, police, FBI, etc …) as it has been one hell of a long ride (and it’s only starting), but I’m no closer to finding out what happened and getting this crap taken off my credit report than I was when I first found out about this.

I’ve contacted several companies about this matter, and most of them have been very helpful, save for one: Blizzard Entertainment. Most companies are willing to tell me when my account was accessed and how often (usually with some arm twisting by a lawyer). Blizzard, however, has been stonewalling my efforts to find out what the fuck happened. Here’s the weird tale thus far:

  • I had a World of Warcraft Account from March until May. It was a 3-month subscription, which I canceled before June (yes, I have another account).
  • Sometime in October, Blizzard e-mailed me a notice of account closure. I either didn’t receive this e-mail or it was lost in my spam trap.
  • After finding out these discrepancies on my credit report, I started my long quest to get this crap resolved.
  • After going through my credit card bills, I noticed I had a second WoW account.
  • I tried to log into this account only to be met with a “this account has been closed” message. Odd.
  • I gave WoW Billing a call with the understanding that they cannot reinstate accounts. I was told that the account “was compromised” and I needed to contact  WoWAccountAdmin at blizzard.com. Ok, cool, maybe I’m getting somewhere?
  • WowAccountAdmin tells me that the account closure was justified, and won’t tell me anything else.

Now, here’s what I know about this WoW account:

  • I opened it in February 2006.
  • I had a free month.
  • I signed up for the 3-month subscription.
  • I canceled the subscription before June (when I would be billed again).
  • I had not accessed the account after June (I logged in before June and again after the billing date to confirm that the subscription was canceled).
  • The account was outright closed in October for “exploiting the World of Warcraft economy or for being related to someone who did exploit the economy.”

So, here’s my problem:

  • There’s a 4-month discrepancy between the time I had an active subscription and the time the account was closed.
  • I moved to an apartment at the end of August. This apartment had NO Internet access. I only had Internet access from my college.
  • I only recently had Digital Cable and Cable Internet installed in my apartment at the beginning of November (I still have the bill to prove this!)
  • So, there was a period of almost 3 months when I had no way of accessing WoW.

And despite ALL of that, Blizzard refuses to help me clear up this mess. If the account WAS compromised, then I need to know! The thing is: I don’t care about getting the account reinstated (WowAccountAdmin appears to be obsessed with “investigating” the possibility of reinstating the account). I just want to find out if there’s some jackass running around with my information, and if it came from that Blizzard account.

If I can prove that my information was compromised, and when that happened, I should be able to get this crap removed from my credit report.

Anyway, yes, I’ve contacted the police about this development (as well as a lawyer). I’m really just venting. The past couple of months have been hell.

keep after them. they have a responsibility to fix this. plus keep writing about it. it’s amazing what a little bad press can do.

I have a few friends that had their accounts hacked after installing some addons. Perhaps this is what is going on, someone set up a trojan horse when you installed an addon and then activated your account that way.

No clue how that stuff works, but my friends accounts were cleaned out after installing addons.

How did you pay for the three months? was it with the credit card? Is it possible that blizzard was in fact hacked and that this may be how they got your information in order to start stealing your identity? If this is a possibility then that may be why they are not so eager to help you lest you find out that they had a leak. They may have some liability.

Blizzard are not very helpful when it comes to account closure. Fair enough i used a third party programme. But their website says they will send a 72 hour warning the 1st time you use it. i didnt get one. I got a permanent ban. I emailed them about this and they didnt give a damn.
