Ubuntu Giving Its Users Paper Cuts?
Love it or hate it, generally speaking most people fall into one of the two camps for Ubuntu Linux. Whatever it may be, people everywhere have strong opinions on the idea of Linux being ready for most people. It’s a debate in which everyone seems to be “right.”
One thing that may help Ubuntu along, however, is the continuation of the Paper Cuts program. These are generally UI issues that need to be addressed, but are minor enough not to warrant being called bugs.
This time around as work continues on Ubuntu 10.04, developers hope to have addressed all confirmed Paper Cuts with that release before it goes live. Based on my experience, as good as Ubuntu can be, it’ll never happen. Hell, they have often released with bugs that I feel should have been addressed, but this is again up for debate I suppose.

I have a hard time knocking the Ubuntu team, given the state of other consumer-aimed Linux flavors. It really does work great out of the box on your average PC, it’s only the fringe cases – which I am fond of using – that cause issues. Most of the minor annoyances are on par with what I experienced in Windows; the only thing that really bugs me (pun intended) is that thanks to their rapid iteration process things that were working one week may be broken for the next.

Two new things have been added to 9.10, ext4 and grub2 may make 9.10 see more bugs. All new software will have bugs, that’s to be expected. The speed at which they are squashed will determine the overall quality of the product.

Does anyone use ANY other linux besides Ubuntu? I noticed that it seems to be all the rage here. I use Gentoo linux (on my server) myself .

Have used Debian, Fedora, PCLinuxOS (still do), Puppy Linux (still do), Simply Mepis, Knoppix.
For problem VIA displays, I use PCLinuxOS and Puppy. And based on the fact my time is valuable, never found value in spending hours tinkering with the DIY distros myself, but that is just me.

I installed Ubuntu as a second OS, and finished up having to format the whole HDD and re-install XP. I then used a different hard drive, installed Ubuntu, and couldn’t even change the screen resolution. A complete disappointment, consigned to file 13.
