Ubuntu Five Years Later
I remember the first time I used Ubuntu. Already being a Simply Mepis and Linspire user at the time, the jump to Ubuntu was only odd based on the use of the GNOME desktop over that of KDE. A few weeks of use later, I found myself loving GNOME vastly more than my info overload with KDE.
Personally, I cannot name any one thing that would provide a reason for Ubuntu success. That being said, I think there are a number of reasons for Ubuntu success. Among them has to be in part to their frequent release schedule, bundled with using the latest cutting edge improvements from Debian testing.
Five years later since Ubuntu first rolled out, I am still amazed at how people still don’t get it. Rather than enjoying it for what it is, they bitch about it and exclaim that Windows is still easier. Yes, so is sitting on your butt and collective welfare. This does not mean that it’s the wisest approach though. Just something to consider. In the end, I am all about people using the right tool for the job. If that is Windows or OS X, awesome. But use that instead of complaining about something that was not a good fit for you. It would be like me complaining about OS X, which I detest by the way. It gets me nowhere.

You detest OS-X? That’s a very bold statement – and hardly productive. That’s the sort of thing I’d expect from a Windows fanboy.
Perhaps you would qualify that remark with your reasons and your level of experience with Linux vs. OS-X?
I use all three regularly and professionally.

Marc: Not really important for the post to go into my short list, but needless to say that 99% is UI related. Does this mean we do not own a Mac? We own iPhones and my wife LOVES her iMac. It merely means that I personally, have no love for the OS as it was never a good fit for me. Hours of hair pulling frustration. Despite the Unix goodness, the UI is not what I was looking for.
This also does not mean that OS X is bad, the devil or should be avoided. Thus, not really needing further explanation. I simply do not like any aspect of the UI or the software included. Merely my opinion. ;)

Hi, my reasons for choosing Ubuntu.
Red Hat wasn’t Debian based and didn’t have apt-get.
Fedora made things difficult to get proprietary add-ons.
Mandrake/Mandriva had an extra layer of configuration options, which made it just a bit flakey. Suse suffered from much the same problem.
Wound up using Knoppix for a while, then discovered Libranet.
This was good because it made a few things easier to configure. That lasted about 18 months until the maintainer unfortunately passed on.
Tried Ubuntu 6.04 and never looked back. The configuration editor in Gnome is straight forward, easy to find extra configuration to play videos etc, no big glitches, does what I want.
cheers

I use Linux, OS X and Windows. I loathe Win 95, 98, ME, 2000 and Vista. XP was okay and 7 looks to be good we’ll see.
I see OS X as a certified Unix with a Mac GUI.
