Is Linux Getting Fat?

There should be an image here!Far be it for me to try and argue a point about Linux from the guy who developed the Linux kernel in the first place! That being said, I am not really sure if Linux seeing some holiday pounds being put on is really a cause for alarm.

The fact of the matter is that Linux is something that can be customized to whatever is needed. Unlike Windows, where your OS is dictated by a single company, Linux allows its users (companies too) freedom to take away any unneeded bloat to better match the goals that present themselves.

On the desktop, yes, as the kernel evolves it is going to get pretty bloated I suspect. And while one can do what they can to optimize this as much as possible, something tells me that most people never stop to consider this when pointing out how bloated Linux apparently seems to be these days. Just something to think about.

Look at uClinux on Wiki, you’ll have your answer

Is Linux Code Source Getting Fat?

Yes, it is due to:
-is big community always adding stuff
-the number of pilots written in the kernel

Is it good ?
For you –> yes
For the dev –> little less maintainable

Bloated does not necessarily mean slow. Sure it is not as bare bones as it once was, but which new feature you take away: all of those unnecessary drivers? Now if you really want to slim the linux desktop down start hacking on X.
