GNOME Gmail Made Easy

Honestly, there was a time when I would have loved to have used this Gmail as the default mail client in GNOME myself. Today, I mostly rely on Evolution - it’s just the best tool for my needs as I despise relying on Web based email too much.
The GNOME Gmail script is a clever piece of help to be sure. It’s available in both Debian packages for Ubuntu/Debian users in addition to also being in a RPM flavor for Fedora systems.
Once installed, the magic takes place fairly easily. Just goto Preferences, then your Preferred applications. Then simply select Gmail as your default client - it’s just that easy. From this point on, using “sendto” links in Firefox should now open up with a Gmail write window for your composing pleasure.

Have you tried Thunderbird?
Evo is a great program but I find it a bit heavy and have had some problems with it in the past.
