GIMP 2.8 Is Going To Rock
Even my Mac using wife is second guessing Photoshop after seeing what a GIMP variant known as GIMPShop was able to provide for her. Bundled with the PS keyboard shortcuts, she found that the two applications were more comparable than she ever imagined.
But for those of us that do not need to unlearn everything Adobe, GIMP 2.8 is shaping up to be something truly incredible. From layer groups to rotating brushes, I am finally seeing some critical aspects of GIMP growing up into what I deem to be a very usable alternative to Photoshop for many users (while not for everyone).
Perhaps one of the biggest changes I have been hankering for was the on-canvas editing for my text. Yes, this means I am no longer adding text to a box as it shows up on the canvas! Finally, I’m able to add the text the right way as to see it reacting in the real world.

Perhaps because I don’t do much with pictures, I don’t do much with GIMP. It’s a LOT of photo-editing power. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s too much photo-editing power.
Given the choice, I tend to go for a more simple editor. I don’t need all the gee-gaws that come with GIMP. Yes, it has gotten tons faster and I’m not complaining about it – it’s just too much for my needs.
I also don’t like the interface. For lack of better term, it has too many separate `windows’. I read that they might be working on this issue in the future.
Enjoy the power.

I looooove GIMP… and Blender.
But what else is new? And when will it be able to save Vector images?

If you are used to photoshop and the navigation of it use Gimpshop instead of straight Gimp. it is an easier learning curve and its still free of cost. http://www.gimpshop.com/

the good news is that you wont need the outdated gimpshop 2.2 anymore once gimp 2.8 is out, since it will have a “single window mode”
but yes you can try gimpshop meanwhile, has more than enough features for almost everyone.
