What Netbook Return Rate?

While the following article made me happy to hear about the lack of a return rate with Linux netbooks sold by Dell, I would be only telling half the truth if I did not point out the following. Most people who purchase Linux products from Dell either know what they are buying or did so by clicking the wrong link…which is unlikely.
So clearly, Linux netbooks are being sold to pre-qualified folks who understand what the differences between Windows and Linux are. Fantastic. And this is exactly why the Walmart - Xandros experiments failed so badly.
Not because there was anything wrong with the idea of buying Linux pre-installed, rather selling to the wrong target market. Sell to people that want the product, success will follow. Sounds like commonsense to me.

I can understand buying something and not knowing what you are buying but something like a computer (Netbook or otherwise) needs to be a thought out purchase. Simply buying it because it is cheaper screams of foolishness. On the other hand I do understand the 90% return rate on Linux Netbooks because I actually bought one. To say the least, I was very dissatisfied with it. The machine was pitifully slow and beyond a resource hog. Netbooks still need to be fast and should not try to deliver a desktop OS to a unsuspecting customer whether that is Linux or Windows.

Don’t forget the linux purchase option saves you money on checkout. This is also an option many will choose if that have a pirate copy of Windows they intend to use.
