Windows With Open Source Apps

There should be an image here!Overall I think this list of open source software for Windows is a pretty decent little list. But at the same time, I still think that it demonstrates that most people could very well take a reverse approach…assuming it was something that was of interest to them.

My mom for instance, runs Linux at her bookstore while using XP at home. I set here up this way as this was the best match for her. Her existing XP machine was fine and because of my setting her up as a Limited User with plenty of malware protection software, she has no issues of any kind.

As for the Linux PC, it is a maintenance free situation that has worked out fantastically for all involved. I SSH into it so I can run any needed updates from the comfort of my home while my mom is able to access all the software she could ever want. In the end, I see the same thing being possible with many other folks out there. Running open source software on a Windows box is cool, but so is running Linux all the way through, too.

I love opensource, the idea, the community that surrounds it, the quality of most apps having thousands of eyes on the source picking out mistakes before they become one, the thing that keeps me stuck is my damn MP3 players. Why can’t all MP3 players just simply support UMS as well as there proprietary drivers? If cell phone’s can agree to standardize the charging ports, we should be able to succeed at this as well!

Firefox. Most home users don’t want to put energy and effort into learning linux. But I think firefox is the gateway to Open Source for casual users. I haven’t got my family to use linux, but they use firefox on both Windoze and OS X. And eventually such switchers might accept linux, if they can find the comfortable, familiar and more secure Firefox on the desktop.
