A Linux Microsoft Cooperative?

The more I read up on Microsoft’s code contribution, the more I find myself being intrigued. The official word is that Microsoft chose to go with the GPL not to appease anyone, rather as a state of enabling their mission to ensure code inclusion.
Makes sense, but I still cannot help but feel like there is something more going on. What are we missing? Is MS looking to do other things? Or is this like some people in the past have pointed out, that this is some sort of showing of Microsoft rethinking their strategy?
I myself, am leaning with this being a shift in strategy. Not saying that suddenly that MS is going to embrace Linux and open source as a concept. Rather that MS is looking at making earnings their top potential as that whole world dominance thing seems to be getting a bit stale.

This is a smart strategic move for MS. A lot of shops are a mixed environment of MS and Linux servers. Using MS for destops, AD and exchange duties and Linux web and file servers. These same shops are looking hard at virtualization to save energy and hardware costs. If MS can offer virtualization with minimal perfomance hits over the other VM vendors then these shops will likely us the MS product because that is what most of their support staff is comfotable with. It also helps to keep the faithful from wandering looking for better performance for their virtualized Linux servers. The descision makers will almost always stick with what they know and are comfortable with if it does no adversely affect the bottom lime.

Trust is going to be big issue with some open source groups as may know MS has way of screwing a good deal and messing things up. If they keep to the rules and all it will be a first. but I can say i feel many will see this as another smoke screen to get hold of codes the Linux Open source groups have guarded so well from MS.
