Most people seem to be under the impression that there is simply too much involved with Linux in order to make a living with it. In actuality, nothing could be further from the truth. While it is accurate to say that you would likely starve to death trying to sell software for this platform if it is targeted at the home user, I think you would be surprised at how successful you can be in the enterprise.
Take iFax as one such example. Here is a company who has managed to take an open source product known as HylaFAX and successfully build services around it to entice enterprise customers into purchasing their products and services.
As you can see from this article, you can indeed work to sell solutions rather than software while making a real name for yourself using Linux and open source software. Working as a consultant, also pays pretty well. Just ask some of the folks contracting for Google amongst others.
