Found this today and I must admit, as absurd as the idea of Ubuntu being “hacked” sounds, all one really needs to do is dig deeper into the details. Based on what I have read myself, I am of the mind that there is clearly someone using remote desktop to take advantage of a rather naive end user. Not faulting them, just pointing out a fact.
As you can see almost immediately, this person clearly ended up with a PC that came with Ubuntu installed. Worse, it came from a local “shop” that apparently set them up as a limited user with no real sudo privileges. Clearly, someone has managed to basically take a variation of this, then used a similar method to ensure remote desktop access from pretty much anywhere.
While there is still the question as to how the router was bypassed, it again leads me to believe that there are number of malicious scripts running on this guy’s machine. I do not pretend to know exactly the above circumstances took place, but it sure sounds like a poorly thought out practical joke to me.
