Gnash Is So Close – Yet So Far Away

There should be an image here!I’ve been waiting for sometime, in weak hope of Gnash becoming a savior way from Adobe’s clutches. Sadly, despite a lot of worthwhile progress, it seems that the project is still quite behind Adobe it would seem.

All of this being said, one nice little advantage I suppose if that if you are simply dead set against using Flash 10 – Gnash does provide an alternative that may be usable for some of what you are looking to do on the Web.

Perhaps one of the most important factors is whether or not it supports YouTube. Largely due to the popularity of the video service. According to this piece, it appears that you can now finally enjoy YouTube video out of the box using Gnash.

I am a Linux user, and I absolutely know the pain of using Flash player 10, but, Gnash is just NOT THERE! At all. Its because Adobe is not willing to open it up to allow third party plugins do the job. At least Microsoft is open enough to talk to Novell, the ones that Develop Moonlight, the Silverlight Plugin for Linux.

That being said, I think Plugins such as Silverlight and Flash player should become a thing of the past. Specifications such as HTML5, CSS3, and AJAX are bringing us even closer to not needing tools such as flash. Yet, Internet Explorer, the browser with the market share, doesn’t support more modern standards, and their development is as slow as a glacier compared to that of Mozilla, Apple, Opera, and Google.

But, those are just my views on that specific issue.
