Google Android Being Rebirthed For T-Mobile

For Google, the release of Android on the G1 for T-Mobile was a very big deal. There is really no question about it. Yet almost overnight, with the release of the iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre, the G1 is feeling its age. Rather suddenly, I might add.
Not to fear though, it looks like Google and T-Mobile have the next phone coming from the T-Mobile will have all of the things that were missing from the G1. This translates into improved battery life, doing away from with the clunky slide out keyboard and also providing MS Exchange support. Something that is a critical piece that a number of G1 users wanted early on.
The next phone release is known simply as the myTouch. Did I mention that you will be able to have more control over the phone itself? It’s true. Using technology known simply as Sherpa, the myTouch will learn what you use and prefer to best design a user profile that best meets with your needs. Beat that, Apple!

Personaly I think apple have already beaten that with a completely customisable interface. Also now with the 3.0 firmware upgrade you can search the entire device with one swipe of a finger or press of a button. Let’s see anyone beat that! Oh and it’s available now, as opposed to whenever google gets around to a release.

Typical Apple fanboy response. “iphone is the best. noone else can beat it”. Honestly iphone 3.0 software IS nice. And much needed improvements. Just as the Android software on the new myTouch phone will have much needed improvements.
I had the iphone and liked it. But personally I like the G1 setup better. In the 1.5 upgrade I received on the phone last month, the minor improvements already rival those of the iphone. The app stores are comparable. I myself cant wait for Android 2.0 and Sherpa.

I for one prefer the G1 hands down. I had been dying for a phone with a fold-out keyboard, after I tried the iPhone for a week and took it back.
The G1 has all the features the iPhone lacked, that apparently Americans weren’t aware of in the first place, and the underlying linux-based OS is a dream.
I won’t be switching to the myTouch, though, unless it has a full keyboard like the G1. However, I’m pleased that there will be more Android phones being sold, which will cause even more and even better apps to be produced.

Android 2.0 doesn’t even have a release date so it’s pointless to speculate about it. As of now the MyTouch will come with the Android 1.5 that is already released. The MyTouch will not have a single new feature or improvement over a G1 with Android 1.5, except for the exchange client. It doesn’t even have a faster CPU, so it will be slower than the iPhone 3GS and competing with last year’s iPhone 3G which is selling for $99 now.
Sherpa is an app, not an OS feature. It tells you where the next restaurant, pharmacy or supermarket is based on your GPS location, which is hardly anything new. Those apps are a dime a dozen nowadays. The gimmick is supposed to be that it will learn over time if you prefer restaurants or supermarkets. Wow. The screenshots look crowded so my prediction is that it will bomb.

I personally prefer the Blackberry Storm. Especially with the last set of firmware updates. It actually is a great phone, and I am a fan of the click screen. I am actually amazed at how many texts i get from Iphone users that are plagued with typos. They’re pretty much a non issue on the storm.

How was the keyboard clunky? I really do find myself liking the touchscreen for navigation, especially for the music player, but you just can’t beat a keyboard when it comes to text input. Seems like every article I read on the MyTouch is hailing it for removing the keyboard which in my opinion is one of the worst things they could have done. If I wanted an ipone I would have bought an iphone.
