Windows 7 Giving Linux A Run For The Money

There should be an image here! While I don’t pretend for a minute to say that Windows 7 can compete with popular Linux distros on price, it does appear that the OS can compete on system requirements. As you can see from this recent article, one individual was able to get Windows 7 running on a Pentium 2 PC with as little as 96 MB of RAM.

I think for the first time in a very long time, Windows is putting themselves in a position to where they are more vested in the success of the OS and less about trying to help the hardware vendors sell more machines.

But as stated previously, Linux wins on price as Windows 7 is expected to be pricey. Bundle that with the release being neutered on netbooks and I find myself feeling rather grateful that I have various Linux distros to fall back on rather than being subjected to whatever limitations Microsoft has for us this time around.

Microsoft backed off on the 3 app limit for netbooks running Windows 7. FYI.

[...] I think that Windows 7 is going to be a trip. From the OS being able to run on machines running as little as 96-128 MBs of RAM to trying to correct the dog performance I found happening with Vista on PCs right out of the [...]

well done to Microsoft I didn’t think they could recover our trust after vista but they did (ok win 7 does have a few tiny issues such as the 3 app limit on the starter edition that was removed,) but as mentioned above or below it can be run on a pc running with such little ram.

Win 7 will and you write this down be as slow in system as Vista after the computer makes load it down with apps and all.The current RC get slower every updates
People will be running IE and searching with Bing(I am going to be getting calls for fixing systems with this app running) and all the new apps will be poping up all over the screen and Win7 will be just vista lite again.
Linux is good and there is many configs to chose from and people just need to take the time play with it and find they can use it.

I tried Ubuntu 9.04, 8.04, Mandriva, and Vector Linux and all failed. I gave up and am willing to stay with Windows.

I’ve been running Windows 7 RC1 on an old Socket 939 motherboard.

I’m currently using it as a Multimedia Computer, with a 250 GB SATA drive. Windows 7 is the only thing installed on the hard drive.

I’m surprised that Windows 7 runs so well.

I probably won’t buy Windows 7 for this computer. The computer is not worth enough.

I’ll probably reinstall Windows XP instead.

Linux won’t due because I need something that will play the Netflix online videos.

I don’t understand it. Numerous people post that they can’t use Linux. It took me a while because I have basically been self-taught, but now I run Ubuntu 8.04 on all my machines including my laptop. I gave an old PIII 800MHz 512Mb RAM machine loaded with Ubuntu 8.04 to a friend who knows nothing about computers and OS’s. Taught him a few things and now how has an ebay business he runs from that computer. From F-spot automatically managing the photos to the 10 second plug and play setup of the printer and the NO BLUE SCREEN occurrences – we love Ubuntu.
