Monitor Triple Threat
As most linux using NVIDIA and ATI owners already realize, setting up two monitors on most popular Linux distros is pretty simple these days. It simply means you will need to be using proprietary drivers for the video card and the GUI control panels for each, should you wish to avoid slipping into “command line commando” mode.
Still, for those who are using other video chipsets, there are options here as well. While not nearly as easy, they are accessible for those who are able to follow some step by step instructions. for Ubuntu users, the instructions can be found here using a program called Synergy. Using Synergy means you are able to extend you desktop to practically anything.
This means extending your desktop from a tower to a notebook, even if you are using different platforms. Despite it being more less of a virtual KVM switch, in many ways, one could use Synergy to extend their desktops so long as it is just used for extra desktop space.

I used synergy religiously before I got my dual monitor setup. it’s a great program to use the same keyboard and mouse over different machines.
